Will Dhoni Play CSK vs KKR Tonight at Chepauk? Here's What We Know

Every CSK home game at Chepauk this season has carried the same question. The one question that 50,000 yellow-clad fans ask before the toss, before the playing XI, before anything else.

Will Thala play tonight?

Tonight — April 14, 2026 — as Chennai Super Kings take on Kolkata Knight Riders at MA Chidambaram Stadium, that question is louder than ever.

The Current Situation

MS Dhoni is still recovering from a calf injury. The Chennai Super Kings management is taking a cautious approach and is unlikely to rush him back without complete fitness.

There was a brief moment of hope for fans yesterday. Dhoni was spotted having a hit in the nets on the eve of the game, getting throwdowns from Michael Hussey. For CSK fans, any Dhoni sighting in the nets is enough to set social media on fire.

But the reality is more measured. The session was not at full intensity, suggesting that while he is improving, he may still need more time before being fully ready for competitive action.

His absence from wicketkeeping drills suggests that he may still need more time before being considered for selection.

The Verdict — Dhoni Will NOT Play Tonight

Based on everything we know, Dhoni is unlikely to feature in today's clash against KKR. The team management is not willing to take any risks at this stage of the tournament.

According to a post by @IS_Netwrk29 (Indian Sports Network) on X this morning, there is no chance of Dhoni playing tonight.... The batting order remains Gaikwad and Samson opening, Dewald Brevis at number four, and no changes to the bowling lineup.

When Will Dhoni Return?

Dhoni might return to action in CSK's match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 if his recovery goes as planned.

That is the date every CSK fan should circle. April 18. SRH vs CSK. If Dhoni's calf heals on schedule, Chepauk could finally get the moment it has been waiting for.

There is also a possibility that when Dhoni does return, he could initially be used as an Impact Player — allowing the team to manage his workload while still benefiting from his presence in crucial phases of the game.

CSK's Predicted Playing XI Tonight

Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Sanju Samson (wk), Ayush Mhatre, Sarfaraz Khan, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed, Gurjapneet Singh

Notable absence — MS Dhoni

The Match — CSK vs KKR Context

This is effectively a bottom-of-the-table clash — CSK with one win from four games, KKR winless with three losses and one no-result. KKR are the only team yet to win a game this season.

CSK come in with confidence after Sanju Samson's match-winning century against DC. KKR arrive desperate, under pressure, and searching for their first points.

Historically CSK dominates this rivalry with 20 wins to KKR's 11 in 32 matches — especially at Chepauk where CSK have a formidable home record.

IPL Bench Verdict

Dhoni will not play tonight. But the good news is he is training, he is improving, and April 18 against SRH could be the comeback match.

Until then — Ruturaj, Samson, and the boys must hold the fort. After the brilliant win against DC, CSK have every reason to believe they can make it two in a row tonight at Chepauk.

The Yellow Army is waking up. With or without Thala tonight — Whistle Podu. 🦁

Will AR Rahman Sing "Nee Singam Dhan" for Dhoni Tonight at CSK ROAR'26? — The Song That Was Made for This Moment

Imagine this. It is 8 PM at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Fifty thousand fans dressed in yellow are standing on their feet. AR Rahman is at the centre of the stage, the Chepauk floodlights glowing above him. MS Dhoni is somewhere in the stadium — the man who has made this ground his home for nearly two decades. And then the opening notes of Nee Singam Dhan begin. If that happens tonight at CSK ROAR'26, it will be one of the most goosebump moments in the history of Indian cricket. Not because of the cricket. Not because of the occasion. But because of four words from that song that were, unknowingly or knowingly, written for exactly this man, at exactly this moment in his career. Nee Singam Dhan — meaning You Are A Lion — is a powerful Tamil song composed by AR Rahman and sung by Sid Sriram. It was released in 2023 as part of the soundtrack of the Tamil film Pathu Thala. The lyrics were written by Vivek. The song is about a person of extraordinary strength and resilience. Someone who stan...
